Ground truth systems FAQ

“Ground truth” data are measurements known to be real or true through empirical evidence. Ground truth systems provide highly accurate positioning, serving as the benchmark for evaluation performance.

When developing your solution, a ground truth system is used to verify the accuracy and reliability of your positioning system. While your autonomous solution operates and outputs where it thinks it is located and oriented, the ground truth system can tell you if that location and orientation are true.

Satellite positioning alone offers metre-level accuracy, which may not be precise enough for advanced automotive applications. Correction services elevate the positioning accuracy to the centimetre-level in real-time. We have different offerings depending on whether you operate in areas without cell or internet access. If you're not sure whether you need Network RTK, precise point positioning (PPP correction services), or another combination, we suggest reaching out to our experts.

GNSS outages from tunnels or dense urban environments can compromise your data accuracy when gathering data in real-time. By post-processing your data, you can clean up inaccuracies – including those caused by inertial positioning drift and signal interruptions. Hexagon's Waypoint Inertial Explorer post processes your data both forward and backward in time, then combines the results for optimal accuracy. It provides access to stored corrections from the TerraStar and SmartNet networks, and offers intuitive, customisable workflows that adapt to your technical and business needs.

RINEX hours refer to Receiver Independent Exchange hours, which provide incredibly accurate and standardised positioning data from the SmartNet network within a single country or continent. It provides raw GNSS data like atmospheric observations, ephemeris, satellite errors, and more, helping fill in data gaps between signal disruptions. The more hours you have, the more data you have access to that help supplement your overall positioning accuracy.

Our three packages are designed to be flexible to accommodate customers across their autonomy journey. Our Core package is our best scaling option and focuses on real-time positioning. The Plus package provides improved GNSS+INS positioning, and is our best seller because of its flexibility across more complex operating and driving environments. Our Ultimate package provides the most robust, resilient, and reliable ground truth solution for the most challenging environments.

If these options don't meet your needs, however, we encourage you to reach out to our experts. Together, we'll come up with a customised package that best fits your unique application.
